Be Prepared After the Snow Storm

11/12/2019 (Permalink)

A photo of snowfall outside of the SERVPRO of Zanesville Office Be ready for all of the snow fall this season.

Winter is in full affect, and we have the snow to prove it. Recently, our area has experienced its first major snow fall of the season. This amounted to an accumulation of 2-5 inches of ice and snow in most areas of Ohio. Although, it may be beautiful. Snow and ice can cause major damage to your home. While temperatures are low you can experience things like frozen pipes, blown out gutters, and excess weight on your roof. When temperatures begin to rise. You are faced with a lot of excess water around your home. You get about 1 gallon of water to every 1 foot of melted snow. This water is generally going to settle in the lowest area. Most of the time this means your basement. To help prevent water backup. Start to clear snow from around the foundation of your home as soon as temperatures start to rise. Make your paths lead towards storm drains and away from your home. This will help to deter the melted snow from going towards your home. Hopefully, keeping it safe, and warm!

Storm Prep!

8/24/2018 (Permalink)

This time last year we were unfortunately dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane  Harvey. Everyone in the country chipped in to help those who were affected. We have only seen minor tropical storms so far this year. Which is a blessing. However, it is very important to be prepared if another major storm were to hit. Its always a good idea to have a emergency plan put in place. Your family needs to know what to do in case of flooding, power outages, and other storm related emergencies. Make sure you have extra light sources such as candles, flashlights, and batteries, along with staples including water, non-perishable food items and blankets. Also, it is a good idea to have a designated safe area. This is a place your family knows to meet and wait out any dangerous storms. This will prevent getting separated and eliminate any confusion there may be. Always remember we are here to help!

Tis' The Season of Storms

8/10/2018 (Permalink)

Storms are devastating, and storm season can be a very stressful time of year. It is important to be prepared. You may not think it is necessary, but even in Ohio we still experience, hind wind, lighting, and an abundance of rain. These things can cause damage. Excessive rain leads to unwanted water build up, flooding, and much more. Winds can knock down branches, and cause damage to your roof, windows etc. These storms lead to power outages that can last several days. Make sure you have plenty of water stored, and an alternative source of power if possible, and of course and abundance of flashlights, and candles. Being prepared and staying calm is key during this time of year. Just know we are always here to help!

Outside Water?!?!

5/23/2018 (Permalink)

Mother nature as we all know has a mind of her own. Sometimes what she decides to do outside makes it way into our homes. Water could come in from weakened spots in the foundation, through a unsealed windows or doors. Often times it is rerouted towards our homes do to clogged drains. The Storms are Here!

5/16/2018 (Permalink)

This week we are expecting severe storms. These storms are supposed to bring high winds, and rain. This type of weather can lead to severe damage to your home. To much rain can cause drain build ups, or water leaks. Leading to water getting inside your home. If this happens it is important to get the water out and your home dry as fast as possible. We can help if this happens but hopefully it does not. You can prevent some of these damages by doing things such as..

  • Maintaining your drains

Check for things like overgrown roots, and debri blockages.

  • Making sure all windows are tightly shut
  • Checking the condition of your roof
  • Making sure all outside waterways are clear and draining away from your home.

Following these few simple steps could save you thousands of dollars when you think of the cost of a water damage to your home. Stay dry this storm season!

How to Save Money this Winter.

2/8/2018 (Permalink)

I dread this time every year. Not only am I ready for warmer weather, but also a smaller heating bill! I can not change the weather. However, I can provide you with some tips for lowering your heating cost.

  • Buy a programmable thermostat. This way you can set your temperatures to automatically go down 5-10 degrees when you are going to be gone for a long period of time. You should also lower the thermostat while you sleep.
  • Unplug electronics and appliances that are not being used.
  • Block any breezy areas. You can use blankets or plastic.
  • Routinely maintenance your heating system to ensure it is running at it's most efficient.
  • Make sure all your register and air vent are open, and that nothing is over top of them.

Icicles: Friend or Foe?

1/25/2018 (Permalink)

I don't know about you, but when I was young I used to love Icicles. They are just pretty and somewhat magical. We used to have sword fights, and eat them like a Popsicle. Looking back probably not the best decisions, but hey. We were kids. In reality icicles can be very bad for  homeowners. They occur when snow starts to melt and the water ends up somewhere the temperature is still below freezing. Icicles if in abundance can put stress on your homes structure causing damage. Icicles can also lead to ice jams. This is where water drainage in places, like your gutters is blocked. The water then retreats and usually ends up in your attic or walls. To prevent icicles make sure your home is well insulated and your warm air is not getting out and helping to melt the snow. Make sure your home is well ventilated. You can also take a rake and be sure to remove as much excess snow from your roof as possible.

Also make sure to have all the trees routinely trimmed around your home to prevent damage from fallen branches. Storms are unpredictable, and can leave your home destroyed in a matter of minutes. often times you are also left without electricity. Make sure you have a first aid kit, candles, and alternative heat, and light sources available, and easily accessible to you. Too often homeowners are unprepared, and the damage is substantial, when most could have been prevented. Here at SERVPRO we always do our best to help in your time of need. Day or night give us call. Hurricane Irma!

9/8/2017 (Permalink)

Hurricane Harvey hit last month devastating Texas. This Week we have an even bigger threat getting ready to hit Florida hard. Hurricane Irma is reportedly a strong category 4 at this time. Florida citizens have been warned this storm is not one to just  wait out. The damage and lives lost will be catastrophic. People have been evacuating Florida all week. It has been reported up to a 14 hour trip just to make it out of Florida at this time. Those who have nowhere to go are urged to properly prepare themselves. Hotels have been ordered to waive the no pets policy in hopes of reducing the number of pets lost in the storm as well. As scary as this all sounds another storm is reportedly on its way, and expected to cross paths with Irma. Our thoughts are with all those in the path of these storms.
