Christmas Safety: Extension Cords Edition

12/1/2022 (Permalink)

Not enough cord for your lamp or radio to reach the nearest outlet? Just plowing through the junk drawer for an extension cord? This may not be a good idea. Extension cords can be very helpful in delivering power right where we need it. However, regardless of the gauge or rating of the cord, an extension cord is a temporary solution, and is not meant to be used as a long-term extension of your household’s electrical system.

Using extension cords properly is critical to your safety. With continuous use over time, an extension cord can rapidly deteriorate, creating a potentially dangerous electric shock or fire hazard. The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) offers the following tips for staying safe from electric shock and electrical fires:

  • Do not overload extension cords or allow them to run through water or snow on the ground.
  • Do not substitute extension cords for permanent wiring.
  • Do not run through walls, doorways, ceilings or floors. If cord is covered, heat cannot escape, which may result in a fire hazard.
  • Do not use an extension cord for more than one appliance.
  • A heavy reliance on extension cords is an indication that you have too few outlets to address your needs. Have additional outlets installed where you need them.
  • Multiple plug outlets must be plugged directly into mounted electrical receptacles; they cannot be chained together.
  • Make sure the extension cord or temporary power strip you use is rated for the products to be plugged in, and is marked for either indoor or outdoor use.
  • The appliance or tool that you are using the cord with will have a wattage rating on it. Match this up with your extension cord, and do not use a cord that has a lower rating.
  • Never use a cord that feels hot or is damaged in any way. Touching even a single exposed strand can give you an electric shock or burn.
  • Never use three-prong plugs with outlets that only have two slots for the plug. Do not cut off the ground pin to force a fit. This defeats the purpose of a three-prong plug and could lead to an electrical shock. Never force a plug into an outlet if it doesn’t fit.
  • Use extension cords with polarized and/or three-prong plugs.
  • Buy only cords approved by an independent testing laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL), ETL-SEMKO (ETL) or Canadian Standards Association (CSA).
  • Do not substitute extension cords for permanent wiring.

Recognizing potential mold in your commercial building

5/9/2022 (Permalink)

Whether you are a facility manager, employer, or even a landlord, you most likely understand the importance of combating mold growth. However, the seriousness of preventing mold in your building can often be overlooked. Mold can have financial repercussions with hefty consequences. State laws require that areas of employment meet certain safety standards, it’s important to know the ins and outs of mold growth.

What Causes Mold Growth?

Mold spores thrive in environments where dense moisture and low light are present. Once spores get a hold of water and oxygen in a darker area, they are bound to spread at a fast rate. Water buildup can occur from broken pipes, leaky roofs, basement/lower level flooding, and a variety of other avenues. Regardless of how stagnant water finds a way into your building, once it’s there, toxic mold has the potential to thrive and be extremely difficult to remove.

What are the Signs of Mold Growth?

Although it can come in different colors and growth patterns, mold is universally recognized by its fuzzy, sometimes slimy texture. As a facility manager or business owner, it is important that you know mold growth can give off signs in a couple of ways.

Visual Evidence of Mold

The easiest way to know that you have mold is to physically see it growing within your building. Once mold has been seen, don’t hesitate to call and have professional mold removal services inside your structure.

Once a mold outbreak starts, it can cost your business tons of time and money to stop it. Taking proper preventative measures can save you from potentially disastrous results. Here are some best practices to keep your Ohio business safe from mold.

  • Check the pipes in your building or hire a crew to perform frequent building maintenance.
  • Make sure your building has proper ventilation throughout the entire property.
  • Ensure carpets are kept clean and consider replacing old carpet that might become a host for spores.
  • Place a dehumidifier in your building throughout the hot, moist summer months.

Contact SERVPRO of Zanesville/Cambridge

Preventing Water Damage From Frozen Pipes

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

Temperatures have reached way below freezing already this year. During this kind of weather it is very important to prepare your home for the harsh weather.

  • Make sure your pipes are insulated. You can even buy heat tape to wrap your exposed pipes in at your local hardware store.
  • It is also a good idea to leave your cold water dripping in the night, and when you will not be frequently using water. This keeps movement in your line and helps to prevent freezing.

When water freezes it expands. When this happens in an enclosed area. Such as a pipe. It can cause severe damage. Your pipes can burst under the pressure and leave your home soaked. Winter is one of our busiest times of year, and frozen pipes are the leading cause of water damage in the winter. So stay warm, and stay dry this winter and if you happen to have a water damage give SERVPRO of Zanesville/Cambridge a call at (740) 844-0977.

Be Prepared For Winter Snow!

1/18/2022 (Permalink)

Winter is in full affect, and we have the snow to prove it. Recently, our area has experienced its first major snow fall of the season. This amounted to an accumulation of 2-5 inches of ice and snow in most areas of Ohio. Although, it may be beautiful. Snow and ice can cause major damage to your home. While temperatures are low you can experience things like frozen pipes, blown out gutters, and excess weight on your roof. When temperatures begin to rise. You are faced with a lot of excess water around your home. You get about 1 gallon of water to every 1 foot of melted snow. This water is generally going to settle in the lowest area. Most of the time this means your basement. To help prevent water backup. Start to clear snow from around the foundation of your home as soon as temperatures start to rise. Make your paths lead towards storm drains and away from your home. This will help to deter the melted snow from going towards your home. Hopefully, keeping it safe, and warm!

Fire Safety This Winter In Zanesville

12/27/2021 (Permalink)

We often hear of the house fires in our community and band together to help our neighbors in need, but most of us like to believe we will never be in their situation. Unfortunately, fire can happen to anyone. Even those who take extra precautions to avoid them. When you hear your smoke detector go off, or realize you have a fire. It is important not to panic. You need to exit the building as quickly as possible closing all doors, and windows on your way out if possible. Always, check for heat before opening any closed doors. You do this by placing the palm of your hand on the door. It is also very important to stay as low to the ground as you can, because smoke rises, and smoke inhalation can be fatal. After vacating the building immediately call 911 so they can send your local Fire Department. If you are unable to get out there are things you can do to spare time while waiting to be rescued. Stay low of course, and get a wet blanket if at all possible to put over you. This helps prevent smoke inhalation. Always stay in one spot in an open area if  so the Fireman can find you. If you hear them calling for you make sure you make noise. If the smoke is not thick you can yell, but it is better to make other noises. You can bang on the wall, or floor, even blow a whistle if you have one. Try to wait by the nearest window, and leave all door ways clear. This is so the fireman get to you without anyone getting injured. After, the fire is over. it may seem like all is lost, but this is where SERVPRO can help. We specialize is fire restoration, and are trained to help you in your time of need.

Dealing With Smoke Damage in Commercial Buildings

12/26/2021 (Permalink)

When a fire occurs, SERVPRO of Zanesville/Cambridge works to assist business owners and proprietors to move forward and put their lives and businesses back together. It can be overwhelming. The restoration process after a commercial fire is laborious if not time-consuming. It includes:

  • damage assessment
  • debris removal
  • odor, soot, and residual water mitigation

Fire and smoke damage restoration professionals are there to advise and direct business owners to sift through the damage and greatly aid in rebuilding their businesses and commercial properties.

Once undertaken, the goal of commercial fire damage restoration is to thoroughly clean every nook and cranny of a business or commercial property after a fire. In a fire’s aftermath, much of the damage restoration focuses on eliminating the persistent smoke odors and the accompanying soot and residual water. Every trace of the contaminants responsible for odors must be scrubbed clean and deodorized. High-powered equipment such as air scrubbers can help clear the air of particulates and odors. Industrial air movers and dehumidifiers mitigate residual water and moisture from putting out the fire.

It all hinges on taking action quickly. In doing so it’s possible for smoke and fire restoration professionals to minimize damage and loss. Here are several steps to anticipate how your restoration professional deals with smoke damage after a fire occurs on your commercial property.

Smoke Odors

As with most fires, commercial fires leave a pungent odor that permeates the building, furnishings, fixtures, and air throughout the property. Those odors are in large part a result of the fire source itself—the debris from the fire, the soot and residual water and chemicals that were used to extinguish the fire. The debris must be dealt with first.

Once the fire and insurance company have determined an origin and cause of the fire, restoration crews move to quickly remove the debris and soot from the premises. Materials such as charred furnishings, rugs, and ceiling tiles are carried out until the property is emptied of any burned remnants of the fire. Debris removal also mitigates odors by removing microscopic dust particles, airborne and settled, that derives from soot deposits and burned debris. Debris removal reduces the intensity of odors, but will not completely eliminate them. Soot and residual water also combine to contribute to smoke odors, and they must be dealt with.

Soot Removal

Thick layers of soot mixed with moisture cover a good portion of commercial fire sites. Soot is the black, powdered carbon and chemical byproduct of the burned material after a fire. Depending on the material burned in commercial fires, the chemical or acidic composition of soot can cause further damage on its own to just about any surface it is in contact with. Soot can stain porous and textured surfaces, permanently discolor granite, plastics, grout and the un-burned fixtures made of wood or textiles.

Removal of soot can reduce the likelihood of permanent soot staining discoloration and may reduce the costs of replacement. As an important step in fire damage restoration, industrial vacuums are very helpful in removing the layers and bulk of powdery soot after fires.

Residual Water

Not only is mold a problem after flooding but after fires as well. Residual water from extinguishing the fire can lead to mold spreading throughout the property if it is not properly mitigated. The increased moisture in the air interacts with mold spores. In a confined space this allows mold to grow rapidly, covering and staining porous surfaces. The smoky odor after a fire rapidly combines with mold to further contaminate the air and interact with surfaces. The longer such odors interact with surfaces the more difficult it will be to completely eliminate the odor.

Commercial fire damage restoration entails industrial-grade air movers and dehumidifiers to remove water and moisture that can lead to airborne mold spores. All interior walls must be checked for water damage. All surfaces must be cleaned thoroughly and wiped down with anti-bacterial agents throughout the process.

If you have a commercial building with fire damage, give us a call to help get you back and running.

Understanding Water Categories

12/22/2021 (Permalink)

When you experience a water loss it is important to stay out of the affected area as much as possible until you know what it is you are dealing with. There are typically three different categories of water damage.

  • Is clear

Category 2

  • Water is clear or slightly cloudy could have visible debris in it
  • Water has sat for prolonged period of time

Category 3

Prepare Your Home

Staying inside is no guarantee of safety. Take these steps to keep your home safe and warm during the winter months.

  • Winterize your home.
    • Install weather stripping, insulation, and storm windows.
    • Insulate water lines that run along exterior walls.
    • Clean out gutters and repair roof leaks.
  • Check your heating systems.
    • Have your heating system serviced professionally to make sure that it is clean, working properly, and ventilated to the outside.
    • Inspect and clean fireplaces and chimneys.
    • Have a safe alternate heating source and alternate fuels available.
  • If you do not have a working smoke detector, install one. Test batteries monthly and replace them twice a year.

  • Check your tires’ tread or, if necessary, replace tires with all-weather or snow tires.
  • Keep the gas tank full to avoid ice in the tank and fuel lines.
  • Use a wintertime formula in your windshield washer.
  • Prepare a winter emergency kit to keep in your car in case you become stranded. The kit should include:
    • Cell phone, portable charger, and extra batteries;
    • Items to stay warm, such as extra hats, coats, mittens, blankets, or sleeping bags;
    • Food and water;
    • Booster cables, flares, tire pump, and a bag of sand or cat litter (for traction);
    • Compass and maps;
    • Flashlight, battery-powered radio, and extra batteries;
    • First-aid kit; and
    • Plastic bags (for sanitation).

Take Precautions Outdoors

Outdoor activities can expose you to several safety hazards, but you can take these steps to prepare for them:

  • Wear appropriate outdoor clothing: wear a tightly woven, preferably wind-resistant coat or jacket; inner layers of light, warm clothing; mittens; hats; scarves; and waterproof boots.
  • Sprinkle cat litter or sand on icy patches.
  • Learn safety precautions to follow when outdoors.
    • Work slowly when doing outside chores.
    • Take a buddy and an emergency kit when you are participating in outdoor recreation.
    • Carry a cell phone.

We hope these tips have helped you and we wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! If you ever have any more questions or needs, please call us at 740-844-0977.

Fire Safety: Christmas Edition

12/15/2020 (Permalink)

While we love decorating for Christmas, fires related to either Christmas trees or lights is a huge problem each year. Use these tips to help prevent the Christmas Fire.

  1. Connect no more than 3 strands of mini light sets together, plugged into the same power outlet.
  2. Make certain no more than 50 bulbs are used simultaneously in screw-in light bulb sets.
  3. Make sure your Christmas tree is at least 3 feet away from any heat source, including space heaters, radiators, fireplaces, candles and even heat vents.
  4. Keep candles at least 12 feet away from anything that is flammable.
  5. Consider using electrical candles instead of flame-producing candles.
  6. Keep your tree well-watered. Dry trees account for the vast majority of Christmas tree fires.
  7. Get rid of your Christmas tree after Christmas or when it is dry.
  8. Use the right type of extension cord. Two-wire extension cords are usually fine for indoor lights, but be certain to use a three-wire, grounded extension cord for any outdoor light display.
  9. Do not overload outlets by using mutiple-plug adapters.
  10. Check for damage or deterioration to any extension cords and discard if any damage or deterioration is evident.
  11. Do not connect extension cords together for longer runs. It is safer to use a single cord of the correct length.
  12. Always turn off festive decorations, both indoor and outdoor, when you leave the house or go to bed.
  13. As always, instruct your family on appropriate fire safety rules and procedures. Make sure you have fire escape routes planned throughout the home and that all family members are properly instructed in their use. Test your fire alarms weekly.

We hope these helped. If you do need us for any smoke or fire damage clean up, please call anytime at (740) 844-0977.

Let's Get Rid of Those Smoke Odors!

11/24/2020 (Permalink)

After a fire most of the time there is a strong odor left behind. This odor stays even after surfaces have been cleaned. In order to neutralize these smoke odors we use special deodorizers. One of my favorites is the Lemon Fresh Deodorizer. It doesn't just cover up smells it actually neutralizes them by forming a complex with them. Lemon Fresh can be used on most water stable surfaces and fabrics. It also works on cigarette smoke, and other household odors. Lemon Fresh can be used in any area of the home, and is lightly dispersed with a mister. It will leave your home smelling lemony fresh, and of course clean! So don't despair we have what it takes to get your home back to preloss condition.

Do You Have Re-occurring Moisture?

11/20/2020 (Permalink)

Moisture likes to hide. It hides in places like your ceilings, walls, and floors. Without the proper equipment to dry these areas, you can experience things like mold, rot, and discoloration. Luckily, here at SERVPRO of Zanesville/Cambridge we have the equipment to get the job done. Our Injectidry Drying system allows our technicians to get in there, and make sure all those hiding spots are dried out properly. The technicians would poke holes into the hard to dry areas in unnoticeable spots. Places such as behind baseboards. This machine dries those areas by injecting air between stud cavities, or removing moist air with negative pressure. This will dry up unwanted moisture, and greatly reduce the chance of problems in the future due to the water build up you experienced. We are always here to help, and prepared to get the job done. Our techs will find the problem, and fix it.

How to spot water damage in your home

2/25/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage to a home is a much more serious problem than many people realize. Aside from the obvious property damage, water damage can lead to a myriad of health issues including allergic reactions, asthma and other respiratory issues.

Fortunately, there are ways you can spot water damage in your home. It goes without saying that not all damage is going to be visible. Water can leak in hidden places like the inside of the walls which you’ll likely not notice unless and until some severe damage has been done. This is why you need to do some up close inspection to detect damage. Spotting the problem areas early on will certainly help you ward off future issues that can prove costly.

With that in mind, here are some of the most common indications of damage that may enable you to determine if water is leaking in your home.

1) Water Stains

An obvious, telltale sign of water damage! Stains or slight color discolorations that appear on the wall, floor or ceiling without any apparent reason are most likely an undetected water leak in your roof or walls. While inspecting the surface of your walls/ceilings may be an obvious step, be sure to take a close look at the corners where the walls meet the ceiling, floors and each other for discoloration as well.

2) Humidity and Dampness

Unexplained humidity or dampness in your home can be a sign of an undetected water leak. Check for wet surfaces (such as counters and walls) where water shouldn’t be accumulating. Oftentimes, a leak nearby is the culprit.

3) Mold

Mold can be found anywhere moisture and oxygen are present. Unless it’s simply a case of finding a small amount on your shower curtain liner, mold in your home is a serious problem. A mold problem is usually indicative of one or both of two things: humidity issues or a water leak. In cases of mold, unless the source of the excess water is apparent, a professional is necessary.

4) Strange Noises/Dripping

While the sound of water dripping is obvious, leaking water can sometimes take on deceptive sounds in a home. Listen closely when the house is at its quietest moments (night time when the traffic outside is at a minimum and most people are sleeping). Water leaks can sometimes be identified by a scratching or rushing noise not necessarily associated in our minds with water.

5) Soft Spots or Paint Damage

Paint and wood are often the first to show signs of water damage in a home. Warped floorboards or peeling paint is often a reliable sign of water damage.

What to do when your house floods

12/19/2019 (Permalink)

Whether you evacuate or stay in your house during a flood event, you may not be sure what to do about standing water. Primary and secondary damage will intensify the longer water lingers in a residence. Within a matter of days, building materials may begin to corrode or rot and mold growth will become likely. These four steps will walk you through the flood damage mitigation, cleanup and restoration process starting with a call for house flooding help at the first indication of water damage.

1. Contact SERVPRO of Zanesville/Cambridge

As soon as you see signs of flooding, call SERVPRO of Zanesville/Cambridge. A certified technician will call you back to set up an appointment and connect you with nearby professionals who specialize in restoring flood damage. Flood water is contaminated and may result in more severe property damage than other types of water damage. The extent of damage will depend on how many floors of a residence are inundated.

2. Arrange for Mitigation

Mitigation describes any measures taken to limit the severity of primary and secondary damage after a flood event. Pumping out standing water is the most crucial mitigation measure that must be taken as soon as possible following a flood. Experts may recommend using different types of pumps depending on which levels of a home have flooded.

It may take longer to pump water out of a flooded basement as it is necessary for pressure on the inside and outside walls to equalize to avoid causing structural damage. Professionals will strive to strike a balance between the need to eliminate standing water as soon as possible and preserve integrity. A combination of training and on-the-job experience makes professional house flooding help invaluable during the initial stage of flood recovery.

3. Have Your Home Cleaned and Disinfected

Restoration professionals usually classify the effects of flood water on property as highly contaminated Category Three water damage. You should expect to have hard surfaces in your home treated with disinfectant. Porous building materials and contents may require specialized treatments or replacement. Even after water is pumped out, damage may continue to intensify until cleaning and disinfection are complete and drying is underway.

4. Rebuild and Restore

When the area inundated by flood water is completely dry, rebuilding and restoration can take place. Irreparably ruined materials may require replacement, surfaces may need to be refinished and mold remediation may be necessary — all of which can total thousands of dollars. Rebuilding from a flood may also involve the installation of flood prevention equipment such as flood vents in the foundation, a sump pump, back-flow prevention valve or overhead drain. An investment in preventing future flooding may limit structural damage risks for a residence located in a flood zone.

You should be aware that most homeowners insurance policies exclude flood damage. A separate flood insurance policy or endorsements or riders for mold may be necessary to cover costs. It may be possible to limit the amount of a flood insurance claim or the sum you must pay out of pocket by hiring experienced professionals rather than attempting to clean up flood damage on your own. Hiring experts may cost more up-front, but having all of the damage caused by flood water cleaned and dried can help you avoid costly continued structural damage or mold problems.

If you have any questions regarding flooding of your home, call SERVPRO of Zanesville/Cambridge at (740) 844-0977.

How do you know when your home has mold

12/12/2019 (Permalink)

When your house has mold, there’s more than the smell you have to worry about. Not only can mold cause an unpleasant odor, but it can also damage the integrity of your home’s structure and cause ill health effects. Mold can cause a variety of illnesses affecting the eyes, skin, lungs, heart and more. The most common indication of mold is a musty smell. However, there are many other signs your house has begun to grow mold in different areas. Learn more about spotting the signs of mold and what you can do to wipe it from your home.

Spotting the Signs

If you’re concerned that your house has mold, here are the most common and obvious signs to look out for:

Visible signs

  • If you see black spores spreading on surfaces, it’s a sure sign of mold in your home.
  • You’re always fighting cold or flu-like symptoms – Mold causes cold and flu-like symptoms, so it may be an indication that you have mold hiding somewhere if you’re sick way too often.
  • You can smell a musty/damp odor – Mold smells, it’s one of the best ways to detect it even if you can’t see it.
  • You’ve developed respiratory issues – Mold spores are airborne, when you breathe them in, they can find their way into your lungs and cause breathing difficulties or trigger asthma symptoms.
  • You see uneven patches on floors or walls – If damp is finding its way into your walls or floors and causing bubbling under your paint, squishy floors, etc., then you almost certainly have mold growing there too.

If you suspect any of these signs, give SERVPRO of Zanesville/Cambridge a call at (740) 844-0977.

Fire Safety Month is Here!!

10/10/2018 (Permalink)

Fire safety month is a great time of year to educate those on what to do if you experience a fire.

Storm Prep!

8/24/2018 (Permalink)

This time last year we were unfortunately dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane  Harvey. Everyone in the country chipped in to help those who were affected. We have only seen minor tropical storms so far this year. Which is a blessing. However, it is very important to be prepared if another major storm were to hit. Its always a good idea to have a emergency plan put in place. Your family needs to know what to do in case of flooding, power outages, and other storm related emergencies. Make sure you have extra light sources such as candles, flashlights, and batteries, along with staples including water, non-perishable food items and blankets. Also, it is a good idea to have a designated safe area. This is a place your family knows to meet and wait out any dangerous storms. This will prevent getting separated and eliminate any confusion there may be. Always remember we are here to help!

Taking all precautions to make sure the growth will not reoccur. Finally we deodorize so your home is left smelling fresh, and mold free.

Mold is Upon Us

8/10/2018 (Permalink)

The amount of mold estimates we have had come in this summer is at an all-time high. The excess heat and humidity on top of everyone running their AC units to stay cool, has made a perfect spawning environment for unwanted molds and mildews. We have helped people who have been in their homes for 20 plus years and have never experienced any issues. To lower the chance of your home harboring molds. You should watch for things like excess condensation on your windows and ceilings. Running a dehumidifier in high moisture areas can also reduce the risk of mold. Watch for abnormal musty odors because that can sometimes be a sign of mold somewhere in the area. If you are having an issue or just need someone to check. Give us a call. We are always here to help.

What to do When you Find Mold

6/6/2018 (Permalink)

Mold is a fungus that grows in moist usually dark areas. There are different types of mold varying in color, smell, and side effects. In most cases the elderly, those with pre-existing heart conditions, and young children are most susceptible to mold.So what do you do if you find mold in your home? First, you want to try and figure out why the mold is growing in that area. You may have a leak or just excess moisture that a home grade dehumidifier can take care of. Then you want to remove and contents that may be effected by the mold. Mold has spores that reproduce and can fly through the air. It is important when removing mold to have proper safety equipment. The process to remove mold involves a Hepa Vac and then the use of a Sporicidin to reduce chance of the spore re-spawning. Most of the time a sealant can be applied as well. If you are not certified to remove mold. You should not remove it. Common signs of mold are musty odors, damp areas, and of course visually seeing the growth. If you have mold and need assistance give us a call. SERVPRO is always here to help.

Water, Always Expect it.

6/5/2018 (Permalink)

Most of the time when a water damage occurs a home owner discovers it immediately or after just a short while. These are usually losses that involve a lot of unwanted water in a short amount of time. That is not always the case though. Often times things such as AC units, hot water heaters, and downstairs restrooms develop a small leak that goes unnoticed. Minimal amounts of water escape and soak into your contents, walls and flooring. Not showing surface moisture, but still doing damage to your home. These go undiscovered sometimes until the homeowner notices their floors or walls molding or even rotting out. By this time the damage is usually significant. That is why it is important to check all appliances and crawl spaces routinely for leaks and unwanted moisture. You want to pay attention to any wet or stained surfaces, mold, and off putting odors. These could be signs of excess water somewhere in your home. If you do need assistance. Do not hesitate to call.

Mold, It Happens!

5/7/2018 (Permalink)

Mold is tricky little devil who can spore almost anywhere. Most of the time we don't even think about it, until we find it that is. Most molds grow best in temperatures between 68 and 86 degrees, and feed on organic materials. This means they can feed on almost anything in your home. They do best in moist environments. So it is very important to keep your home properly ventilated and clean up any liquid spills or leaks within your home. Mold does not discriminate and show up almost anywhere. We have been in spotless homes that have been affected by mold. Always make sure to do routine inspections. Inspect places like your attic, basement, and even in your cabinets and closets. It only takes 24 -48 hours for mold to grow and be visible. Often times it is accompanied by a musty smell. So keep your eyes and nose open. If you find mold, do not worry we can help. Just give us a call.

Make sure your pipes are wrapped, your furnace is working, and all your drains are clear. This can greatly reduce the chance of water damaging your home. It is also important not to DE-winterize your home too early. We had a few nice days. Do not let it trick you. This year after a few warm days. The first day of spring brought a snow storm along for the ride. Hang in there all. Warm weather really is just around the corner. If mother nature does decide to bring in the unexpected. How to Save Money this Winter.

2/8/2018 (Permalink)

I dread this time every year. Not only am I ready for warmer weather, but also a smaller heating bill! I can not change the weather. However, I can provide you with some tips for lowering your heating cost.

  • Buy a programmable thermostat. This way you can set your temperatures to automatically go down 5-10 degrees when you are going to be gone for a long period of time. You should also lower the thermostat while you sleep.
  • Unplug electronics and appliances that are not being used.
  • Block any breezy areas. You can use blankets or plastic.
  • Routinely maintenance your heating system to ensure it is running at it's most efficient.
  • Make sure all your register and air vent are open, and that nothing is over top of them.

Heating with a Wood Burning Stove?

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

With the temperatures so low and the cost of heating so high. Many homeowners have opted to use wood burning stoves to heat their homes. This method is efficient and perfectly safe. As long as you follow a few safety tips.

  • Most importantly make sure you have smoke and Carbon monoxide detectors installed throughout your home
  • Make sure your stove is properly installed, and has been inspected by a professional.
  • Keep all contents the proper distance away from the stove. Per your cities fire safe guidelines. It is usually  at least 3ft.
  • Use seasoned wood only and light small bright fires. No paper or trash!
  • Clean you chimney yearly and have it inspected.

Have a safe warm winter!

Mold Even When it is Cold!!!

2/2/2018 (Permalink)

Photo taken outside of our office 1/17/2018

In the winter it is a common thing to winterize your home. You may put plastic over your doors or windows. You take extra precautions to block any of the cold air from entering your home. The main goal of winter is to keep it out. Right? This most certainly does keep your heat bill down, but it also keeps moisture that your home produces in. You may start to see mold grow. It will show up in along your windows, walls, and even in your closets. To avoid this make sure you check your windows often, and clean any growth immediately. It is also a good idea to run fans, or even purchase a small dehumidifier or two. Depending on the size of your home. This will circulate the air and reduce moisture. If you do experience a problem or discover mold. Remember you can always call us!

Icicles: Friend or Foe?

1/25/2018 (Permalink)

I don't know about you, but when I was young I used to love Icicles. They are just pretty and somewhat magical. We used to have sword fights, and eat them like a Popsicle. Looking back probably not the best decisions, but hey. We were kids. In reality icicles can be very bad for  homeowners. They occur when snow starts to melt and the water ends up somewhere the temperature is still below freezing. Icicles if in abundance can put stress on your homes structure causing damage. Icicles can also lead to ice jams. This is where water drainage in places, like your gutters is blocked. The water then retreats and usually ends up in your attic or walls. To prevent icicles make sure your home is well insulated and your warm air is not getting out and helping to melt the snow. Make sure your home is well ventilated. You can also take a rake and be sure to remove as much excess snow from your roof as possible.

A Clean Chimney is a safe Chimney

12/18/2017 (Permalink)

There are only 7 days until Christmas, and this winter is going to be a cold one. With it fast approaching. It is important to make sure your chimney is clean. Not only does the big guy appreciate it. It also helps to prevent unwanted fires, smoke and soot back up. You want to always check for material build up and small animals. You can call in a professional or clean your chimney yourself. With the proper tools of course. If you choose the DIY option.Make sure to prepare your home with a few drop cloths around the fire place. This is  to prevent your contents from being soiled. Also always clean top to bottom. Your chimney will be Santa approved and ready for his arrival.

Happy Holidays from SERVPRO Zanesville/Cambridge!!

DIY SERVPRO Holiday Cookies!

12/7/2017 (Permalink)

I wanted to come up with something creative and heartfelt for my clients this holiday season.  So I decided to bake cookies. What says we appreciate you more than homemade cookies? Homemade SERVPRO cookies of course!

To share the love with my fellow marketers I am posting a how to guide. Don't be discouraged though. You can use any design or color with my quick sugar cookie method.

You start off with your favorite cut out sugar cookie recipe. Remember most will require a chill time. I added a link to the one I used. It turned out great and the dough only needs to chill for an hour. The only thing I did differently is use lemon extract instead of almond, and of course I added food coloring.

https://sallysbakingaddiction.com/2014/05/27/soft-cut-out-sugar-cookies/

I chose orange for my dough. It took about 20 drops. Some of the color will bake out, and you do not want them to end up looking brown. To avoid this make sure dough is brightly colored. It will fade some. Use gel coloring to avoid changing the consistency of the dough. You want to add the coloring after all other ingredients are combine. I kneaded mine in.

After your dough has chilled it is time to cut your houses out. I could not find a cutter the shape I wanted so I cut one out of thin cardboard. It worked great, but is more time consuming.

Then you bake. Mine were in the oven for about 7 min.

After they are completely cooled. It is time to decorate.

I used a squeeze bottle for my border, and letters. I then used a sparkling green gel, and sprinkles for my lights. It takes a steady hand. My advice is to do it quick and steady. That helps to avoid breaks in the pattern.

What I would change?

I would use royal icing instead of creamy. It holds better and isn't as messy.

They may not be the prettiest, but they are from the heart, and taste delicious!

Gun Season is here!

11/27/2017 (Permalink)

Today is the first day of gun season for White Tails here is Ohio. Many hunters actively take part in this season every year. It helps to control the population and reduce risk of starvation and/or the hard hit on our crops. It is important to take certain precautions during this time. If you are hiking make sure to wear hunter orange. You can purchase a vest or shirt from most of your local stores. It is also a good idea to keep your animals indoors or tied up this week as well. Accidents do happen, and your pet could be mistaken for a deer. When all the rules are followed hunting is a clean, great thing for our community. It brings in a lot of revenue for the state. This reigns especially true in our area. Where the deer are a plenty, and very healthy. If you take part. Stay safe, have fun and good luck!!

Thanksgiving Fire!!

11/20/2017 (Permalink)

Thanksgiving is to me one of the best holidays. Good food, family, and friends nothing makes me feel more thankful than that. Thanksgiving to most people means a huge feast prepared by mom, grandma, or another loved one. Roasted or deep fried turkey, mashed potatoes, and pies are usually among the many entrees presented in most homes. This means hours of cooking, for the presenter. Sometimes they get rushed or sidetracked, and it leads to a fire. The greatest number of home fires are said to occur on Thanksgiving Day. The top causes are food being left or forgotten while cooking on the stove or in the oven. Leaving heat sources to close to materials and of course deep frying that turkey. So be safe the holiday season, and enjoy your meal!

Winter is on the Way!

11/3/2017 (Permalink)

Halloween is over, and the cold is starting to set in. So far it seems like we didn't get much of a fall this year. The leaves are still mostly green in my area, and we have already seen our first snow of the year. With the cold weather fast approaching it is important to make sure your home is weatherized. Especially your plumbing, and pipes. If not properly insulated water can freeze inside of them and bust. This leaves you without water, and a mess.

Here are a few easy ways to prevent frozen pipes this winter.

  • Keep a trickle of cold water running through your pipes at night. This will help keep water flowing and prevent it from freezing.
  • Keep your thermostat at the same temperature day and night.
  • Wrap exposed pipes with heat tape.
  • Always remember if all else fails. We can help!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!

10/27/2017 (Permalink)

I don't know about you guys, but Halloween is my favorite holiday. Dressing up, eating candy, carving pumpkins. I just love it! The best part though has to be seeing all the little ones in their costumes. Nothing is more adorable then a little pumpkin or monster.  I will be dressing up this week. I'll pass out candy to our contacts, and business associates. Then of course I will be taking my two children(4&2) Trick or treating.....3 times! We might go a little bit overboard Ha Ha. What are your favorite memories, or fall activities? Candy Apples are  my go to fall treat. No one is too old for Halloween. Holidays are great At SERVPRO. Enjoy the harvest season, be safe, and drink lots of Hot Chocolate!

Fire Safety Month!

10/25/2017 (Permalink)

In honor of fire safety month, here are some tips to stay safe!

  • Make sure you have smoke alarms on every level of your home. If you can not afford to buy them. The Red Cross or your local fire department would be happy to install some for you.
  • Test your alarms every month. Too often a smoke alarm is present, but not in working order.
  • Make sure you and your family have a fire escape plan. Make sure every one knows their exit, and where to meet after you get out of the house.
  • Always stay low to avoid smoke inhalation.
  • Get out as soon as possible. Do not worry about belongings or pets. The Firefighters will do their job.
  • When you're out safely. CALL FOR HELP!

Water It Can Happen to ANYONE!

10/9/2017 (Permalink)

We recently were on a water job, were the upstairs toilet line had sprung a leak. The client caught it within an hour, and still experienced detrimental damage to their home. Their home was completely up to date, and beautiful. All appliances, and plumbing had just been gone over. They hadn't had any kind of incident the whole 45 years they had been married. These customers knew how to keep up a home, and still experienced water damage due to a tiny fault in the line. Disasters do not discriminate, and no matter how prepared you feel you are it can happen. This couple being as on top of things as they were had already removed their contents, and placed dehumidifiers before we were even notified. This greatly reduced the damage that could have occurred. Luckily everything was covered, and saved because they were ready, for the unexpected.

Dry Sponge

9/27/2017 (Permalink)

When a client has a fire there is usually a large amount of soot left behind. Dry soot is easier to clean then wet soot. So to make things as easy as possible, and to make sure not to damage the client's paint or wallpaper we use a Dry Sponge. This special sponge allows us to get the majority of the soot off without risking damage due to wet cleaning techniques. Our technicians take the dry sponge and go over surfaces such as walls with wall paper, or other surfaces that may be damage by cleaning solutions. The rest of the home is cleaned using special solutions, deodorizers, and Ozone machines. These techniques combined leave the home clean, and fresh. Our goal is to make it "Like it never even happened"

Mold is a Tricky Thing!

9/25/2017 (Permalink)

All too often our clients have mold infestations that could have been prevented if the customer had only known what to look for. When a water damage occurs everyone looks for, and expects there to be mold growth. However, it does not take a water leak for mold to occur. Any moist area can eventually produce mold. That is why it is important to keep your home properly ventilated to reduce moisture, and to consistently check high humidity areas for musty smells or visible mold. It can hide under your carpets, in your windows, or pretty much any other area that is not often checked. Always remember though, if you do find a hidden mold patch to give us a call. We can help, and are always waiting to do so.

How we Handle Water

9/25/2017 (Permalink)

When our technicians are called to a water damage job they know what to expect. We bring all the equipment necessary to get the job done. We first go in and assess the situation. Usually we already have what we need on board. If there is standing water we extract it. Then of course we spray a anti-microbial to prevent mold growth. After this is done thee drying process begins. We set up our drying equipment which consists of air movers, and dehumidifiers. We then go in daily, and monitor the drying progress. We shortly know if a material is going to be able to be restored of if it will need replaced. Our fast system, and excellent techs save both you and you insurance company money by getting the job done fast!

It leaves your home a soppy mess, and can cause permanent damage if not dealt with promptly by professionals. Many home owners will often try to clean these messes up themselves. Although, you may be able to clean up the standing water. It takes special equipment like dehumidifiers, air movers, and moisture monitors to properly dry your walls, floors, and other surfaces. Always make sure you have a first aid kit, and supplies ready in case of an emergency. You should have a supply bag easily accessible, and ready. Your bag should include things like...

  • Flashlights
  • Water
  • Non-perishable food items
  • Clothes
  • Blankets
  • Candles
  • Extra medications
  • Batteries
  • Coloring books
  • Board games

Being prepared can make your storm experience so much easier, and maybe even save your life. So many people have the "It will never happen to me attitude" this is not a good way of looking at things. Here at SERVPRO we deal with the unexpected everyday. It can happen to you, so be prepared!

We do mold!

8/29/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO not only specializes in water and fire damage, but mold mitigation and remediation as well. Along with most water jobs we have to take precautions to make sure mold does not grow. We have special antimicrobial solution that kills mold spore, and prevents them from breeding. If you already have mold though. Do not worry. We can help! We start by going in and finding where the issue starts. Usually it is caused by excessive moisture from a area that had experienced some sort of water damage/issue. We then go in and scrap off and remove all visible mold,  and looking under floors, behind walls etc. To make sure we get it all. We then clean and replace any damaged areas. Taking all precautions to make sure the growth will not reoccur. Finally we deodorize so your home is left smelling fresh, and mold free.

Fire! What to do if it Happens to you!

8/14/2017 (Permalink)

Fire is scary, and if you have one it is very important to know what to do. First, do not panic. When you panic it is easy to forget things, and to make mistakes. This is the last thing you want to do during a fire. When you hear your smoke detector go off, or realize you have a fire. You need to exit the building as quickly as possible closing all doors, and windows on your way out if possible. Always, check for heat before opening any closed doors. You do this by placing the palm of your hand on the door. It is also very important to stay as low to the ground as possible, because smoke rises, and smoke inhalation can be fatal. After vacating the building immediately call 911 so they can send your local Fire Department. If you are unable to get out there are things you can do to spare time while waiting to be rescued. Stay low of course, and wet a blanket if at all possible to put over you. This helps prevent smoke inhalation. Always stay in one spot in an open area if possible so the Fireman can find you. If you hear them calling for you make sure you make noise. If the smoke is not thick you can yell, but it is better to make other noises. You can bang on the wall, or floor, even blow a whistle if you have one. Try to wait by the nearest window, and leave all door ways clear if possible. This is so the fireman can bust them down and get to you without injuring you or themselves. After, the fire is over. it may seem like all is lost, but this is where SERVPRO can help. We specialize is fire restoration, and are trained to help you in your time of need. So to sum it up......
1. Get Out if Possible
2. Close doors, and windows to reduce oxygen to the fire.
3.Stay as low as possible
4. Call 911 when safely outside
If you can not get out
1.Stay low and get to the nearest window
2. Wet a blanket and place it around you to help with smoke inhalation
3. Make sure all doorways are clear for the responders
4. Respond if possible to responders ( Make noise let them know you are there).
Last but certainly not least when everyone is safe call SERVPRO, and we will be there to help.
